OLD LODE LANE

Update: 28 Feb 2006

Planning application to erect garden display area at Mahoney’s

I will be presenting a petition of 82 names to Solihull Council on Wednesday 1 March. I will also speak against the application at the planning sub committee meeting on Wednesday 8 March 2006.

Below is my written submission to Solihull’s planning department in respect of application 143/2006 (the above). I have also requested councillors of the planning sub committee to visit the site this Saturday in order they can be clear about the local environmental impact.

Dear Julia (planning officer)

I wish to formally object to the application to build a garden display area at the rear of 1010-1012 Old Lode Lane by Mahoney's.

I firstly point out to you that there have been ongoing issues regarding the safety of pedestrians in this area, because of the high volume of traffic already going to the premises. A garden display area will only serve to increase business and more vehicular traffic.

The footpaths, street furniture and highway are already in a poor state because of parking on footpaths by visitors to the premises, with very heavy goods vehicles in regular attendance. The council's highways department intends to do some major road works in this area in April/May of this year. This is because of deterioration due to vehicles visiting Mahoney's. The premises do not have a car park large enough for its customers. Local residents quality of life and their environment is therefore compromised. It will be compromised even further if the application succeeds.

Finally, I wish to point out that Old Lode Lane will become a target road for the police and council this year. There will be ongoing road safety operations the whole length of Old Lode Lane.

There is already a clear and present danger for pedestrians, especially those of a senior age residing at Barons Court. This will be increased if the application succeeds.

I will be presenting you with a petition with the names of 78 local residents who object to the application.

I wish to address the planning sub committee when the application comes before them.

Kind regards,

Ken

Action re Anti-Social Behaviour in area:

I have copied a letter I sent to Chief Superintendent Jim McGinty in respect of the exclusion zone near to the Ice Rink, Hobs Moat Road.

Chief Superintendent McGinty,

Solihull Police Station,

Homer Road,

Solihull.

8 January 2006.

Dear Jim,

Re: Anti-social dispersal order – Hobs Moat Road.

Firstly I wish you and all your staff at the Solihull OCU a happy, successful and safe 2006.

I read with great pleasure that a dispersal order, under the Anti-Social Behaviour Act, is to take affect in the area of Hobs Moat, Elmdon. As you are aware, I have complained on several occasions on behalf of residents of Elmdon ward about the behaviour of some of the youths attending the ice rink, in Hobs Moat Road, and causing mayhem in Old Lode Lane and roads leading to the ice rink, especially Windsor Drive and Merevale Road.

I do though have concerns that any group of youths which intend to continue to cause problems for the police and residents in the Hobs Moat Road area might merely walk across the road (towards Windsor Drive and Merevale Road) where I presume the dispersal order will not apply. I wish to flag this up to you to ensure that any disorder and anti-social behaviour is not just displaced.

May I also offer you my support (and that of residents) in relation to any action you wish to take over the ice rink? Youths do need places for them to socialise and take part in recreation. It is important however that the management of the ice rink use the facilities in an appropriate manner so that nearby residents are not put in fear when certain events take place.

Yours sincerely,

Ken Hawkins,

Councillor – Elmdon Ward.

Parking outside Mahoney’s

Below is a copy of a letter I have sent to Solihull Police in respect of the danger posed by vehicles being parked on the footpath near Mahoney’s store:

Inspector Ian Grant,

Solihull Police Station,

Homer Road,

Solihull.

 7 April 2005.

Dear Ian,

Re: Parking of motor vehicles on footpath in Old Lode Lane

Many residents have complained to me about the parking of motor vehicles in Old Lode Lane, near to Mahoney’s building supplies. I have had specific complaints from elderly residents who recognise the extra danger these vehicles cause when they try to cross the road, from Barons Court residential home to the bus stop on the opposite side of the road. I have enclosed some photographs to evidence this (I do not need the photographs returned). In additions damage to the footpath is caused, especially when heavier vehicles park on the footpath, with bollards being knocked down. Almost all drivers of these vehicle visit Mahoney’s for building supplies. There is a sizeable car park within the confines of the store.

Within the next few months the council’s highways department will be resurfacing the footpath and replacing damaged bollards. It is quite obvious that unless road traffic laws are enforced now the repaired footpath and bollards will be damaged, with the road still be unsafe for elderly residents. I request that attention is given to enforcing parking regulations now with a view to ensuring the work undertaken adds to the value of those living nearby. There will also be an immediate feeling of extra safety – as the enclosed photographs indicate.

Please do not hesitate to contact me regarding this or any other issue.

Yours sincerely,

Ken Hawkins,

Councillor – Elmdon Ward.
