ELMDON COPPICE

Update: 28 February 2006

There is some excellent news regarding the play area in Elmdon Coppice.

Many residents will know the history of the site, especially the damage caused to play equipment and the amount of graffiti.

The play area will have some refurbishment this spring.

A brand new, modular, multiplay climbing frame will be erected in March. This will replace the wooden one which was set on fire last summer. In addition, the junior swings will be replaced in April/May. These had to be dismantled in December because of corrosion to the top bar, making it unsafe for use.

I have also asked that the fencing be replaced, to provide better security for our youngsters.

I have previously requested extra police and park ranger attention to this, most valuable, play area. I have even taken photographs of youths, sitting on the swings, drinking cans of beer/lager.

This photograph shows two youths with four cans of alcohol with them.

I have received a suggestion from a resident which I feel is worth pursuing.

Would you agree with Elmdon Coppice (the play area and park are) being made the subject of an alcohol exclusion zone?

I know these have worked in other areas (there are some already in Solihull) and I feel this may help in the drive to rid the park and play area of youth’s intent on continually destroying things that are value to other.  I appreciate that the police, as well as park rangers, will still need to police the area but the creation of an alcohol exclusion zone may help focus people’s attention.
